About Carly Shanks

I am a ceramic artist based in Croton on Hudson, New York. I’ve been hooked on pottery ever since my first pinch pot in elementary school. I have two degrees in Biology, a BA from Skidmore College and a PhD from UNC Chapel Hill. I have primarily worked in academic research settings studying plants, but have also taken pottery classes and maintained my pottery practice for the last ten plus years. I currently work as a primary caregiver, and I am a member of the Peekskill Clay Studios, where I make pottery and take classes.

My work often reflects my love of plants and the environment. I am inspired by the intricate details of the complex beauty found in nature as well as the changing seasons of the Lower Hudson Valley. I incorporate designs on my pottery based upon my observations using surface design techniques like painting, sgraffito, Mishima, carving, water etching, and imprinting. I make functional art that I hope will add joy and excitement to every day life. I use porcelain and stoneware clay bodies, fired in an electric kiln to cone 6. All pieces are made with love and intention that I hope shines through in my work.

Making art is where I feel like my true self and at peace in my body. It is an honor to share my work with you. Please take a look around the gallery and contact me if you see anything you like or would like to commission any pieces. I would love to work with any local folks looking for pottery.
